Module 5 · DNSLesson 4 of 4

Goal: Confirm you can trace a lookup, choose the right record, and explain why a change hasn't shown up yet.

Four questions: three on this module, one on Module 3. Every answer explains itself, right or wrong.

Your browser needs the address of shop.example.com, and nobody has looked it up recently. Who does the walking from the root servers down?
You're putting example.com itself, the bare domain, on a host. Your DNS host has no ALIAS record. What do you create?
You created app.example.com's record five minutes ago. Your laptop says the name doesn't exist, but a different resolver returns it. What's going on?
From Module 3: your app saves uploaded photos to its server's own disk, and they vanish when the server is replaced. Where should they go?

Retry as often as you like.

Before you go, name each part.

DNS at a glance: from memory

Name each part before you reveal it.

Does the lookup for you, and caches answers.
Holds a domain's records.
One fact: a name, a type, a value.
How long an answer may be reused.
A resolver walks from the root to a domain's nameservers, reads a record, and remembers it for its TTL.
